TJ Kong & the Atomic Bomb

TJ Kong & the Atomic Bomb are a band of so so's who sound like Bob Seger high on cocaine in the bathtub watching Werner Herzog movies.Or, according to The Deli, "A cross between the Mountain Goats, Tom Waits and the ghost of Captain Beefheart serenading the crowd at a drunken rodeo."Driving rhythms, pulp fiction, upright bass, blues guitar, caterwauling drums, and drunken sweaty coal miner's baritone, that's the gist of it. On September 25th the band released their second full length- MANUFACTURING JOY -a rare blend of whiskey-soaked balladry, bootstomp folk, punk, gypsy rock and American roots music OR as they like to call it, Post Apocalypse Blues. In it's young life, Manufacturing Joy has already garnered much critical acclaim, earning the band the cover of Philadelphia's Citypaper for it's October 4th issue, where Citypaper's Drew Lazor wrote, "The band's second self-released full length is a strong step forward for an outfit already considered one of Philly's most potent live acts." Philadelphia Weekly featured the album, alongside releases by Pink, Meek Mill, Major Lazer and Sun Airway as one of the 5 new Philadelphia albums to buy in their annual Fall Guide. WXPN in an exlusive interview on The Key blog said "TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb spin wandering, interweaving stories about outcasts and outlaws on dramatic benders, suffering from cocaine nosebleeds and bourbon hangovers as they cling to their last thread of sanity. Manufacturing Joy takes these stories of desperate living and uplifts them into danceable jams."Pre-JOY era Kong primer: Since the release of their first full-length- IDIOTS -in spring 2010, described by Pop Matters as "somewhere between The Basement Tapes and Anodyne, with a ragged, lo-fi aesthetic and lyrics drenched in heartbreak and whiskey," the band has spent most of their time touring the country (hosted by festivals including POP Montreal, South By Southwest, CMJ Music Marathon, Denver GABF, Truck America and O+ Festival) honing their live show into a machine of gritty, soulful joy. They've opened for bands such as Mercury Rev, Phantogram, Here We Go Magic, White Rabbits, J Roddy Walston and the Business, Dax Riggs, West End Motel, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, so on and so forth."Playing Americana 'slash blues', the duo sing, wail, lament and brood over being drunk, hungover, alone, depressed, sweaty and lost. A simple recount of a whiskey-inspired tradition on guitar and harmonica." - POP Montreal"A post-apocalyptic fall-out shelter house band." - Philadelphia Weekly"Entertainingly unhinged." - CBS Philadelphia
