Hanna Ashbrook
As a singer/songwriter with indie rock influences, Hanna Ashbrook "…crafts sophisticated songs that belie her youth. Plucked guitar provides a counterpoint for her vocal melodies that slowly rise and fall. At times, her songs seem to capture a sing moment, crystalized and delicate, and her voice can be simultaneously vulnerable and strong” (Homeroom Chicago). Ashbrook grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and has two younger siblings. While neither of her parents were musical, she still found interest at a very young age; starting with the violin and progressing to piano, then guitar. After receiving a guitar from her mother for Christmas when she was 15, she began to teach herself to play. She started out writing lyrics over a few chord progressions, as she gained proficiency on the instrument. At about the same time, Ashbrook’s step-father exposed her to Radiohead, Interpol, Muse and other alternative artists. Ashbrook cites Thom Yorke as an early vocal influence, and she later discovered Jeff Buckley and Amy Winehouse. After struggling with nodules and vocal surgeries in 2013, she has since recovered and has opened for acts including BOY and Lily & Madeline, writes jingles for television and commercials, and was most recently a contestant on season 9 of NBC’s “The Voice”.
