Butterfat Mastermind

Butterfat Mastermind’s creator, Steve Sunner, has spent the last decade alternately taking his modern spin on psychedelic blues-rock to clubs in and around Chicago, Illinois or disappearing for long stints into the studio where his maniacal obsessiveness is almost legendary, each album becoming some sort of existential, classic rock catharsis. Once done, given away for free to anyone who might be curious. He arrived in Chicago after a three-year stint at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where he had the bad habit of playing blues licks over jazz changes, refused to learn how to sight read, and, though he was attending a jazz school, chose to major in Classical Composition. It was here that he met bassist Rob Elrick who, being a Midwest native and aware of Steve’s desire to pursue the blues, invited Steve to Chicago to start a music career.Rob has not only played in several other well-known Chicago acts over the years (The Orange Hunters, The Mag Seven, Hack n’ Wheeze) but is a renowned builder of custom bass guitars. Bakithi Kumalo of Paul Simon fame, AndrĂ© Bowman, who plays with India Arie and Jully Black, and Matthew Lux of Iron and Wine are all devotees of his instruments.Drummer Joey Werner's signature energy and hard-hitting style are 100% South Side Chicago. Born and raised here, Joey has played with several local rock scene stand-outs: Mother Sun, Billy Baroo, and Alchey Stone.
