Expo '76 (Ten Year Anniversary!)

It’s been ten years since the four men of Expo’76 (Dag Juhlin, Kenn Goodman, John Carpender and Ralph Baumel) gathered on a fall afternoon in a Park Ridge basement to play together for the first time. Within months they secured their residency at Simon’s Tavern in Chicago, and have been playing at the internationally beloved Andersonville saloon on the second Wednesday of each month ever since. Along the way their reputation as well as their catalog of songs have both grown by leaps and bounds, and their live shows have become a joyous mix of remarkable musicianship and onstage hilarity. They’ve appeared in every possible setting: from backyards to museums; from dive bars to yacht clubs, letting their far-flung set list lead the way. Over the years, they’ve been joined onstage by a cast of characters that’s are as equally far-flung as their ever-expanding list of songs: folks like Syd Straw, the late Andre Williams, Renaldo Domino, Archie Bell, Cubs announcer Len Kasper, actors Joel Murray and Jack McGee, and more. The band will celebrate the first of its tenth anniversary shows on Friday May 31at Martyrs’, where they will be joined by Kelly Hogan and Robert Cornelius, after which there may need to be some roof repair done on the venerable nightclub. Of course, Expo’76 will also be joined by their longtime partners in music and mirth, The Total Pro Horns.
